Kahata’s strike condemns Malawi in Nairobi

The FIFA International friendly match pitting host Kenya and Malawi ended in Kenya’s favour with the host beating Malawi one nil.

Kenya started strongly with intense pressing from Zesco’s talisman Jesse Were and Ovella Ochieng with Jesse taken the first shot which went just wide.

Malawi grew steadily into the match pulling positive moves with Kenya resorting back to defend stolidly. Malawi had their first chance to go a ahead with a calmly taken free kick that missed by a whisker .

Kenya continued pressing with Kahata setting up Were who’s weak shot troubled not the keeper. Malawi then made a quick break catching Kenya off guard a resultant volley was punched off for a corner kick by Patrick Matasi in the Kenyan goal.

Malawi then came blazing from the left flank with a good low cross that got the Kenyan defence off ,a good tap in but keeper Matasi reacted swiftly to make a good save. Both teams got to settle all well with the game getting balanced heading for the breather.

After the breather

After the breather Kenya made double sub bringing in Mutamba Piston and Erick Ouma to reinforce their attack . Kenya came close in the 51st minute through Erick Johanna who took a left curve volley that got deflected off for a corner,the resultant kick went wide much to Malawi’s relief.

Kenya kept on pressing on and in the 60th minute new entrant Antony Akumu made a cleaver chip to Mutamba who’s final touch got cleared off for a throw in. Malawi picked on the loss ball with a well executed long pass that almost got Malawi the opener in 64th minute

With 10 minutes to go Kenya’s several attempts final paid off with a pacy move by Abud Omar and Erick Ochieng,Ochieng then drove in a a beauty that way laid all to find Francis Kahata who tapped in calmly to give Kenya the lead

Malawi made a double sub in an attempt to get an equaliser with 4 minutes to go a move that almost bored fruit with a penalty plea which was not granted as Kenya went on to hold on for victory.

The victory now seals Kenya’s double victory after having beaten Ghana by the same scoreline on Saturday.
