Gor Mahia strengthened their grip at the summit of the KPL standings by moving 15 points clear of their closest challengers courtesy of a 3-0 drubbing of Kariobangi Sharks on Wednesday 1 August at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
Goals from Kevin Omondi, Lawrence Juma and an own goal from Godfrey Shiveka compounded Sharks to their second successive 3-0 mauling in the space of three days after last time out’s 3-0 reversal to Bandari.
The win, which is K’Ogalo’s eighth in a row in the league sees them move up to 55 points, 15 above second placed Sofapaka while Sharks remain seventh with 34 points after suffering their sixth loss of the season.
Gor Mahia were quick off the blocks from the onset and should have grabbed the lead during the opening exchanges if not for Lawrence Juma and Ephrem Guikan failing to capitalize on their early chances. William Muluya’s charges however grew into the game as they looked a more settled side and went close to breaking the deadlock in the 19th minute through Bolton Omwenga who was on target when the two sides met earlier on in the season. But this time his free kick was kept out by Shaban Odhoji who tipped it out from a corner after Bernard Ondiek had been ajudged to have brought down Eric Kapaito.
Sharks would rue that chance as in the 25th minute, Shiveka turned the ball into his own net after a miscommunication from him and keeper Brian Bwire who was off his line when the defender attempted a back pass.
The setback dented Sharks’ game plan as they failed to rally themselves with the half ending with the one goal in favour of the hosts.
