The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the names of the officials that will oversee the CAF Champions League Group A clash between Botswana’s Township Rollers and Uganda’s KCCA FC which is slated for a 4pm( EAT) kick off, away at the Mandela National Stadium on Wednesday 18 August.
In a communique by the football governing body, celebrated referee Bakary Papa Gassama will be the man in charge of the day’s proceedings from the center of things and will depend on the help of fellow Gambians in Sulayman Sosseh and Addul Aziz Jawo as the first and second assistant referees respectively.
Township Rollers has three points from their first group match encounter against the Ugandan side, KCCA who are at the bottom of the standings with goal difference separating the two sides.
Esperance of Tunisia are on top of the group with 10 points which they have accumulated from three wins and one draw and are already guaranteed of a slot in the quarter finals.
Egyptian side Al Ahly are second with 7 points and will be looking for a win when they face the red-hot Tunsian outfit in the fifth round of the group matches.
Gassama is one of the most outstanding referee in Africa over the last couple of years. He has won three consecutive awards by CAF in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
He was also designated “person of the year award in 2015”, by the Gambia News & Report in recognition of his outstanding performance during the 2014 Fifa world cup finals in Brazil, the highest football tournament any referee can reach.
The soft spoke official made history when he became one of the three African referees selected by Fifa to officiate in the 2014 world cup in Brazil. He was in charge of the third game of group D fixtures of the 2014 World cup match between Netherlands and Chile.
Papa who became Fifa referee in 2007, officiated at 2012 London Olympic Games and was one of the few African referees who officiated at the recently concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup.
