Gor Mahia tossed out after painful loss in Algiers

Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have been knocked out of the 2018 CAF Confederations Cup following a 2-1 defeat away to USM Alger at the Stade du 5-Juillet-1962 in Algiers on Wednesday afternoon.

Sirkal had to win in Algeria to make sure of their place in knockout stages following a 2-1 defeat at home to Rayon Sports earlier this month.

But victory for the Rwandan outfit over Young Africans in Kigali today, coupled with defeat away to USMA has ended Gor Mahia’s continental dreams.

Gor Mahia duly end third in Group D, one point behind Rayon with USMA advancing into the quarterfinals as group winners.

The visitors survived an early scare as Peter Odhiambo pulled off a superb save to deny the Algerians from the penalty spot. Mohamed Meftah unable to convert from 12 yards in the 10th minute after Haron Shakava handled the ball inside the area.

USMA duly opened the scoring in the 37th minute as Ibara Doniama guided an unstoppable header into the back of the net to give the hosts a narrow lead at the break.

Amir Sayoud doubled the hosts lead in the 81st minute, but Gor Mahia hit back soon after through George Odhiambo to make for a nervy finish.

Lamine Zemmamouche had to be at his best in stoppage time to deny the Kenyan’s the equalizer as USMA ultimately held on to book their place in the next round and send the Kenyan champions packing.
