USMA duly opened the scoring in the 37th minute as Ibara Doniama guided an unstoppable header into the back of the net to give the hosts a narrow lead at the break.
Amir Sayoud doubled the hosts lead in the 81st minute, but Gor Mahia hit back soon after through George Odhiambo to make for a nervy finish.
Lamine Zemmamouche had to be at his best in stoppage time to deny the Kenyan’s the equalizer as USMA ultimately held on to book their place in the next round and send the Kenyan champions packing.
