Rayon Sports in historic CAF qualification

Rayon Sports edged out Young Africans 1-0 in the 2018 Caf Confederation Cup in a Group D match at the Stade Régional Nyamirambo in Rwanda on Wednesday.

As a result, Rwanda’s Rayon finished second in Group D, while Tanzanian outfit Yanga crashed out of the competition after finishing fourth on the table.

The hosts went into encounter searching for a victory in order to advance to the quarter-finals of the continental competition.

While Yanga had already been eliminated from Africa’s second most prestigious club tournament.

The deadlock was broken 19 minutes into the encounter and it was Bonfilscaleb Bimenyimana, who handed Rayon the lead.

The 20-year-old forward beat Yanga goalkeeper Benno Kakolanya to make it 1-0 to Rayon.

The visitors pushed for the equalizing goal with DR Congolese striker Heritier Makamba leading their attack.

However, Rayon were able to contain Young Africans until match referee Ugandan match referee Mashood Ssali blew the half-time whistle.

Rayon were 1-0 up at the interval thanks to Bimenyimana’s first-half goal.

Young Africans continued to search for the equalizing goal in the second half, but the Rayon defence looked solid and organized.

George Ngonyani was introduced by Yanga coach Mwinyi Zahera in the 61st minute as visitors looked to pile pressure on the home side.

The hosts were happy to sit back and launch quick counter attacks with Yanga dominating possession in the closing stages of the game.

Rayon coach Roberto Oliviera decided to pull up goalscorer Bimenyimana and he introduced Yasin Mugume as the hosts to contain Yanga.

Ultimately, the game ended in a 1-0 victory in favour of Rayon on the day.
