‘The national team is currently going through a transition’ Ethiopian national team forward Getaneh Kebede
The Ethiopian national team have been in residential camp in Hawassa for almost four weeks. The newly appointed Ethiopian coach Abraham Mebratu has summoned a 32 player provisional squad largely made of experienced players from the local league. After weeks of field and gymnastic works, the Walia Ibex are on their final phase of preparations before taking on Sierra Leone on Sunday.
Last Sunday, in an interview with ‘Sport 365’, a radio show on Fana FM, coach Abraham said
‘The preparations have been good, the rate of competitiveness by our players is encouraging.’

After the Burundi friendly match which has ended in one all draw, coach Abraham unveiled a final 23 players squad for the Sunday’s match against Sierra Leone. Among the list of dropped players, many were injured when the national team had been training on the artificial turf stadium for the majority of time before shifting to the international stadium, which is the venue of the game.
Veteran forward Getaneh Kebede spoke about their preparation to the Sierra Leone match. Getaneh has joined the camp after preparations kicked-off as he was in Germany for a vacation then in a busy transfer talks before he signed for St. George. Getaneh has scored the consolidation goal in the friendly vs Burundi.
‘The national team is currently going through a transition under coach Abraham. We are preparing focusing on our opponents. We will shine brighter over Sierra Leone this Sunday.’
Among the summoned players, four are foreign based, the Egypt based trio Omad Okuri, Shemeles Bekele and Gatouch Panom have started training with the team while Albania’s Skënderbeu midfielder Biniam Belay is expected to start training on Thursday.
Ethiopia lost the group opening match 5-0 to Ghana while Sierra Leone beat Kenya 2-1.
The Leone stars contingent has started to arrive in Hawassa starting from Tuesday in different groups.
