Bahirdar Stadium to host Ethiopia-Kenya AFCON qualifier match

Hawassa: The Bahirdar Stadium has been confirmed as the venue for Ethiopia’s Afcon qualifier match against the Harmbee Stars of Kenya on October 10.

There has been a widespread reports claiming a change in venue of the match to the capital Addis-Ababa but in an email chat with Sokafrika Reports, deputy chairman of Ethiopia Football Federation (EFF), Colonel Awol Abdurhaim termed the reports as baseless.

“We have not changed venue of Ethiopia-Kenya from Bahirdar to any other venue. I read the reports, but I can tell you that the EFF did not take such a decision.” Awol stated.
It will be for the first time the Walias are returning to Bahirdar since their sweet 2-0 victory over Kenya in an African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier match played in 2015.

Bahir-Dar City
Built in the popular town of Bahirdar, one of the leading tourist destinations in Africa with a variety of attractions in the nearby Lake Tana and Blue Nile river, the 60,000 seat capacity stadium received recognition by CAF/FIFA in 2015.

Bahirdar hosted Walia’s AFCON qualifier encounter only once in 2015 against Lesotho , a 2-1 victory watched by a record 100,000 plus fans.
With many football enthusiasts in the city as well as travelers from different parts of the country, EFF expects supporters well over the stadium’s capacity.
The Ethiopia national team sit fourth, behind Ghana, Kenya and Sierra Leone on goal difference, in Group F after losing to Ghana 5-0 and a 1-0 win at the Hawassa International Stadium against Sierra Leone that saw them accumulate three points.
