ZESCO edge closer to group phase after Amakhosi win

The Zambian champions are close to a record fourth consecutive group stage berth in CAF competition after they edged out the Glamour Boys on Sunday.

ZESCO United beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 in a CAF Confederation Cup Playoff Round first leg encounter played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Star striker Lazarus Kambole opened the scores in the 23rd minute with a powerful low drive from outside the box with Namibian international shot-stopper Virgil Vries left with no chance.

Kenyan striker Jesse Jackson Were doubled Zega Mambo’s lead on the half hour mark from a well-taken spot kick which he was awarded after Teenage Hadebe fouled him in the penalty area.

Chiefs’ Zimbabwean star forward,Khama Billiat was lively towards the end of the first half and struck the crossbar on the volley before getting Amakhosi’s vital away goal after doing well to shield the ball away from Anthony Akumu to find space to shoot past Jacob Banda.

Were completed his brace in the 53rd minute as he turned in hard-working strike partner Kambole’s delightful cross from the left.

Billiat was still causing havoc in the host’s defence and silenced the impressive home crowd when he tapped in Leonardo Castro’s pass from close range but it was ruled offside much to his the entire South African side’s bemusement.

Chiefs eliminated Islanders Zimamoto of Zanzibar and ASSM Elgeco Plus of Madagascar prior to the Southern African derby while ZESCO where relegated to the competition after they were eliminated from champions league in the first round by giants TP Mazembe.

The two sides meet in the return fixture next weekend at the FNB Stadium.
