Simba,Horoya,Mazembe all win at home to progress to last eight as Pirates,Vita bow out

The continents Premier Club competition entered into the final round of the group phase with Tanzanian champions Simba SC pulling off a stellar performance on Saturday to beat Congolese side AS Vita Club 2-1 and qualify to the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.

The Lions Of Msimbazi were coming into the match nothing short of a win and it was the visitors who opened the scores just after 13 minutes into the match through striker Kasengu Kazadi before defender Mohamed Hussein leveled up the scores 5 minutes after the half-hour mark.

Simba were destined to exit competition before Zambian star Clatous Chota Chama scored in the 90th minute to send club owner Mohamed Dewiji and the entire Uhuru Stadium into wild celebration.

Over in Conakry,1995 champions Orlando Pirates exited the competition after succumbing to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Guinean champions Horoya AC.

Two second-half goals from Abdoulaye Paye Camara and Boniface Haba were enough to see the Guineans progress to the last eight from Group A along with defending champions Esperance ST while the Buccaneers who scored a late goal through Justin Shonga are now out of the competition.

Five-time Champions TP Mazembe were also among the teams that confirmed their place in the last eight yesterday as goals from Jackson Muleka and evergreen Tresor Mputu from both halves of the match saw the Congolese giants beat Algerian champions CS Constantine 2-nil to progress to the quarter-finals after topping the standings in Group C while Constantine,despite their loss finish second and have also confirmed their participation in Monday’s draw.

Defending Esperance Sportive De Tunis rallied to a 2-1 win over FC Platinum at the Babourfields Stadium in Harare on Saturday in a match that was mainly just a formality match for the Tunisians who had already confirmed passage into the next round and traveled to Zimbabwe with only 15 mainly reserve players and head coach Moine Chabaani did not travel with team.

Mohamed Amine Meskini opened the scores for the visitors just after 8 minutes into the match but his goal was cancelled out by Ali Sadiki in the 64th minute before Adem Rejaibi scored the winner 20 minutes later.

Wydad Athletic Club also confirmed their place in the last eight from Group B as a late Mohamed Nahiri long-range strike gave the 2017 champions a 1-nil win over 2016 champions Mamelodi Sundowns who had already confirmed their place in the next round heading into this fixture.

In the other group match,Lobi Stars were 2-nil victors over Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas with striker Alimi Sikiru scoring a double for the Nigerians,however,both teams did not make it through to the next round.

In Cairo,record competition winners Al Ahly SC beat Algerian side JS Saoura via 3-nil scoreline with the goals coming from Farid Talah who scored an own goal,Marwan Mohsen as well as Hussein El Shehat.
Ahly qualify to the quarter-finals from Group D along with Simba.

Finally,Club Africain beat Egyptian side Ismaily SC by a 1-nil scoreline with the goal scored by Ghazi Ayadi but have not progressed to the next round along with their opponents on Saturday despite the result.

The quarter-finals draw is set for Monday,18th March in Cairo.
