Chemelil Sugar Headcoach was left fuming and cursing the referee after his side surrendered a lead to the hosts Vihiga United in an entertaining but highly tempered match staged at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega yesterday.
The visitors started the match on a high and their efforts paid off in the 35th minute when Vincent Mahinga broke the deadlock with a powerful header from Nicholas Akoko’s cross. Victor Ademba cancelled the visitors lead in the 66th minute from a freekick, which turned controversial after center referee Agnetta Itubu and her assistant Dorothy Kendi seemed not to be in agreement initially with Kendi flag remaining high while Itubu pointing at the center, Itubu ruled out the offside after consultation and awarded the goal to the hosts.
Vihiga united made their hopes of surviving relegation axe and ending their nine matches winless streak after skipper Patrick Akulo gave them a lead from the spot after Masinza Christopher was brought down by James Omino in box a decision that was again strongly contested by the visitors causing a halt of the match for some minutes before it resumed.
” I have never complained about a referee in my life but today’s officiating was wanting, this was very silly officiating Itubu won for them, this is what is killing Kenyan football, let teams win fairly, its so discouraging after my team gave their all.I can assure you they will go down with our points”shouted agitated Baraza.
His counterpart on his part was quick to admit that starting on a low note almost cost them.
“They thought they had won the match earlier but the pressure we gave them made us equalize and score a winner. We are working hard to rectify on the small mistakes we make in the first minutes we always start matches weak”said Okoth.
Match officials had to be whisked away by the enforcers for safety after Chemelil Sugar players attempted to attack them.
The result saw Vihiga move a point slightly above relegation zone with 24 points from 28 matches.
