The marauding Central-defender who can also operate in Midfield has revealed he would consider playing for the Lone Star of Liberia should the Liberia Football Association LFA invites he.
Ivorian -born AS Nancy defender Edmond Akichi Ogou says he’s open to representing Liberia should he be given a call-up.
The 31-year-old defender has been one of Ligue 2’s top performers, playing approximately 24 games in AS Nancy eighth place finished in the second-tier of French football.
Born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast Edmond Akichi is eligible to play for Liberia through his mother root, but the defender has represented the Côte d’Ivoire,at under-17 and 20 teams as well as participating in the 2011 African Nations Championship with the Junior Les Éléphants.
“Playing for Liberia is a question I often ask myself,” Akichi told Liberian Sports International, “but it’s the same situation with the Ivorian team. But the truth of the matter I have not have the opportunity to represent them in a senior competition.
“I have never been screened and no one ever contacted me. It’s not something that I really think about. The day it happens, I would ponder over it. I’m not completely closed to a call-up.
“People have asked me why I had not joined Ivorian’s team and I told them it’s because I have not been selected,” Akichi added.
“I was born in Ivory Coast and have live here in France for years, but my mother and grand parents are from Liberia, I have some roots there, meaning I could pledge my allegiance to one country,” Akichi told the LSI.
“I know a much about Ivory Coast, because I have play with them at youth levels, but also hear a little about Liberia from friends, but the truth is that no one [from the Liberia Football Association] has contacted me.
Only of recent I spoke to Ochacha Keita, who are know very well, that use to play here in France, he told me a nice things about Liberia, which a bit interest me, because of my origin.
“So if Liberia do call me, then I have to look at that international option because you can’t close doors. I know for sure that my parents, fans will be excited if it happens, Akichi concluded.
Meanwhile, Edmond Akichi Ogou isn’t the only Ivorian born player with Liberian background that has express interest in playing for Liberia,recently former PSV Eindhoven youth product and now Balzan F.C midfielder the Ivorian -born -dutch player Moussa Sanoh also pick The Lone Star of Liberia has his International choice.
On the other hands,progress have been underway from Liberian underground team of scouts to have players with Liberian background represent, the Lone Star, it has been reported recently that English-born Jonathan William Panzo of French Club Dijon has been on the shortlist of potential player to switch their allegiance to Liberia. Panzo was born to a Liberian parents in England.
